About Our Club

ABOUT OUR CLUB

The premier hub for aspiring aviation lawyers at the University of Calabar. We bridge the gap between academic theory and the evolving complexities of global aerospace regulations.

Aviation legal researchers

Welcome to the
Aviation Law Club, University of Calabar (ALC-UNICAL)

The Aviation Law Club at the University of Calabar stands as a trailblazing academic and professional hub, dedicated to the exploration and mastery of the legal frameworks governing the skies. Established as the first student-led organization of its kind in a Nigerian university, ALC-UNICAL serves as a bridge between classroom theory and the dynamic global aviation industry.

Our Origin

The club was birthed from a legacy of excellence and a passion for specialized legal practice. It was founded by Otumahana Timothy Ogbudu, alongside the distinguished participants of the 2025 Cape Town Convention Moot Court Competition from the University of Calabar.

Inspired by their rigorous engagement with international interests in mobile equipment and aircraft leasing, the founders recognized the need for a permanent platform to nurture the next generation of aviation law experts in Nigeria and beyond.

Our Mission

To foster a deep understanding of aviation and aerospace law among students through research, advocacy, and industry engagement, while positioning the University of Calabar as a center of excellence for maritime and aviation legal studies.

What We Do

We provide our members with a comprehensive roadmap to the aviation industry through:

  • Legal Research & Advocacy: Diving deep into drone regulation, consumer protection, aircraft financing, and international air treaties.
  • Mooting & Mock Trials: Training students for national and international competitions to sharpen their litigation and arbitration skills.
  • Industry Integration: Facilitating educational tours to international airports and regulatory bodies, providing first-hand insight into flight operations and safety protocols.
  • Professional Networking: Connecting students with Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), aviation practitioners, and international legal experts.
  • Policy Drafting: Engaging in the creation of procedural rules and frameworks that mirror real-world legal practice.

Why Aviation Law?

The aviation sector is a cornerstone of global trade and connectivity. As the industry evolves with new technologies—from sustainable aviation fuel to advanced air mobility—the demand for skilled legal practitioners who understand the Cape Town Convention, the Chicago Convention, and domestic civil aviation acts is higher than ever.
